Artists are generally an eccentric bunch, but the work of Dennis Oppenheim is odd by any standard. One work of his is a photograph called "Reading Position for Second Degree". To produce it, Oppenheim laid in the scorching sun with an open book placed facedown on his chest. The photograph showed the artist's severly burned body with a virgin white rectangle where the book had been. Oppenheim made a movie of his own face as he stood in the middle of a small circle of people throwing stones at him. Oppenheim's work was almost outdone by a piece exhibited by sculptor Carl Andre. It consisted of five hundred pounds of cheese anoited with ten gallons of ketchup. The cheese was ten inches thick. The exhibition opened on 19 January 1973 and closed next day.
