The 2011 Tohoku earthquake, with a force of magnitude 9, counts as one of the worst natural disasters of the 21” century and it’s the most powerful one to ever hit Japan. To be better prepared for a similar disaster, an American company made a capsule with a sphere design that has food and offers protection for any danger. The evacuation that the local population relied on for survival didn’t met the expectations, resulting almost 16000 deaths, 6000 casualties and more than 2500 people missing. Sharpe came with the idea of the Survival Capsule while he was on a holiday in 2004 with his family in a coastal town. Sharpe wanted something more flexible than what was made until then, so he thought of capsules that could float above the approaching wave, wich was designed by aircraft engineers with help from tsunamiul experts. There are currently five versions of the capsule, equipped with storage facilities for food and water, 60 minutes of oxigen, seats, a toilet, GPS and solar panels. The cost of the spheres is between $13000 and $20000, wich is a small price to pay for increasing people chances of surviving.
